When designing a template, proceed top down. Building a template is like building a house: Start with the building, then furnish the rooms; only put the pictures on the wall when all the furniture is in place.
Don’t hesitate to make scribbles on paper. Often, scribbles on paper inspire creativity much better than designing on screen. This is especially true during the early stages, for example, when developing the general layout of the type area, or when designing the title page.

Proceed in the following order:
1.If you’re designing a template for a printed manual: Decide on which page size you will use.
If you’re designing a template for online help: Decide for which screen size you’re going to optimize the layout.
2.Set up the type area. For example, decide on whether to use a singular-column layout or a multi-column layout, whether or not to distinguish right pages and left pages, the width of page margins, the position of headers and footers, and so on.
3.Decide on colors.
4.Decide on fonts, font size, and spacing.
5.Create table styles.
6.Create paragraph styles.
7.Create character styles. |
